Toothless Lions one game away

Yet somehow, their reward is a semi-final appearance against the Kiwis next weekend that will put them just 80 minutes away from a shot at the title.
Few would argue they deserve it on what they have delivered so far. Their capitulation to the Kiwis in Newcastle on Saturday was abysmal, leaving shattered coach Tony Smith angrier than he was after his side conceded more than 50 points against the Kangaroos in their worst World Cup hammering in history the week before.
With just over 44 minutes left on Saturday night at Energy Australia Stadium, England led New Zealand 24-8. They then let in 28 unanswered points as the Kiwis, inspired by four-try hero Manu Vatuvei, second-rower David Fa’alogo and their little men, Nathan Fien, Lance Hohaia and Benji Marshall, compounded the Lions’ World Cup misery.
Yet they live to fight another day, a factor not lost on Smith.
“Whether we won or whether we lost (tonight), we’ve got to win next week,” he said.
“We just have to get everything together for next week. We have a lot to play for next week.
“We have one more shot at it and we could be in a Cup final.”
Former champion half-back Andrew Johns, who witnessed the Lions’ timid second-half surrender first-hand, believes England’s biggest problem is the make-up of the side and their edge defence.
“Overall, they were disappointing again and made some terrible mistakes,” he said.
“I’m not sure what it is with them because I can see something there. They were good in patches in the first half and scored some good tries but I’m not sure whether they have got the make-up of the side right, with players in the right positions.”
